Apfelwein ~ Homebrew Apple Wine
Niku Jyaga (Japanese Beef and Potato Stew)
FAQ
Apfelwein is made from pressed apples. The juice or must is fermented with yeast to produce an alcoholic beverage usually around 6% ABV.
The main difference? Alcohol content. Yup, that is it - alcohol content. To qualify as a hard cider, the delicious apple brew may not have more than 8.5% alcohol by volume (ABV), whereas anything above 8.5% ABV is therefore considered apple wine.
Apple wine isn't radically different. It's essentially the same process, but requires more sugar. That extra sweetener ferments over a longer period of time and brings the alcohol content to around 12 to 14 percent, which is more likely to knock you back on your Honeycrisp if you drink a quantity of it.
There are numerous studies that point to the benefits of the apple in its fermented form and apple wine - when enjoyed in moderation - is reputed to improve blood flow and stimulate digestion.
NATIONAL DRINK. After beer, it's the favourite drink in Frankfurt and one of the most popular in the country. On the festival that shares the same name, Apfelwein is the chosen drink for german producers to promote the quality of their fruit.
